APN reveals new masthead for weekday Herald

Next month APN will launch a new masthead for a new and compact weekday New Zealand Herald. Earlier today they revealed a taste of the redesign, “The new look incorporates our existing gothic masthead, acknowledging our 150-year heritage, while positioning the Herald as a modern, multi-media brand” said editor Shayne Currie.

In April the NZ Herald team asked themselves: “If we want to create a new weekday newspaper, that best meets the needs of today’s reader, which design features work best?”

This informed the six-month long design process (working closely with Herald readers) to be re-launched on Monday September 10th, supported with a redesign of the website homepage and a new social reader for Facebook. This is a first for the New Zealand market and will allow readers to access the Herald content without leaving Facebook. Content can be populated based on the users interests and popular content with friends.

“The changing digital landscape requires an innovative approach to content, and we must be continually evolving to meet the digital demand,” says Spencer Bailey, general manager at APN Digital.

What are your initial thoughts?
Do you find the new masthead to be “bold, stylish and striking” as described by APN and the readers?* And what are your thoughts on The Weekend Herald and Herald on Sunday format and design remaining the same?

*I’m certain we can have a more articulate critique!
