Your two cents worth: Work-Life Balance?
by Corinne Smith on 07/05/2012Every designer reaches a point in their career when you have an epiphany and realise something has to change – you need work-life balance. You are working long hours meeting deadlines and juggling freelance clients, passion projects and personal work. It feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day and you are running on empty, fueled by copious amounts of coffee. Most importantly, you haven’t spent quality time with your significant other, family and friends.

Working in a way that aligns with your personal values isn’t always easy and giving yourself permission to say no can be a difficult concept to grasp. However, getting the right balance can open up the door to greater creative fulfillment and better results, all while having more personal time.
So, how do you achieve work-life balance? Or is it a work in progress? And what does it mean for you?

Getting that balance is really tough. We need to be ‘doing’ to grow but also learning new skills and meeting people that may complement our creative aspirations. All while trying to earn a living. If we’re lucky that bit works in conjunction with the others, if not it can be heartbreaking to churn away on something you don’t care about and feeling like you’re going nowhere. In my experience the risks have always been worth it: moving from one creative career to another, moving countries, working for my own business.
