There will be a meeting held on the 10th November to discuss how the changes to the Auckland Council (aka the ‘Supercity’) will affect the arts community. This is the second meeting which will address the issue and attendance is open to all who are interested.
The first meeting was held in September and had the main purpose of identifying the concerns of the sector. There was a question and answer time with public representatives, who were: Nikki Kaye (MP for Auckland Central), Phil Twyford (Labour spokesperson on Auckland issues) and Colin Dale (Auckland Transition Authority representative).
The organisers of the meetings, Artists Alliance and Creative People’s Centre, proposed some key outcomes of the first meeting. They identified the need for a small group to be formed that could represent the interests of the arts sector as developments progressed with the restructuring of the council. They have drafted a vision statement for this group from the key aspects that were presented at the meeting.
The next meeting will aim to seek a mandate from those attending the meeting to form a group that represents the arts sector. Ideas will be discussed about how the group might best represent the sector’s interests to decisionmakers.
It would be great to have representation from the design community at this meeting. With comments by Rodney Hide that he intends to strip back funding to core services in the city, the arts in Auckland may greatly suffer from these changes to council. The more support we can give to those taking the initiative to ensure recognition of the arts the better.
