Vandalism(not a new style of art)can be when some idiot tags over some graffiti art'Jus'markin'my terrortory bro'.The graffiti artists are brilliant I especially enjoy the vibrancy of their colours( happy place). And though art is subjective tagging is not art and in saying that I just shot my self in the foot. Its all art.I am looking forward to mentoring some of these younger wayward artists in the very near future it will be interesting to see what makes them tick tick tick...really though there is some amazing talent, amongst some of these little shits they just need a bit of positive encouragement.Art Rules Ok! Giving your friends your own paintings can be a bit like tagging if they like you and hate your art.

How do you get a council to pick a 'respectable' street artist to produce 'legitimate' street art without it becoming entirely compromised? Yeah - a tricky problem - perhaps one that can't be resolved. It's the inherent nature of the art form to live on the fringe. Perhaps a better long-term view is to find ways to get along better with each other: building owners adopting sensible policies, architectural designers coming up with sensible designs (i.e. if you don't want graffiti on your building, don't build 3 metre high smooth white walls next to a train line,) and vandals understanding better the kinds of things that will piss people off.

Nice thoughts about our streetscape and city identity. Despite your point about the dynamism of the transient, I'd still like to see Auckland reserve some more areas for graffiti artists to show their stuff, a la Melbourne policy.
We have some truely talented street artists in this city and they get too much grief and not enough recognition. Although there is the conundrum of negating the subversive nature of graffiti by legitimising it in the public sphere, tricky..

Hear fuckin' Hear!!!

I do however believe there is a difference between the annoying scribble on Mr & Mrs Lovely-Peoples' newly painted fence and the awesome stuff that's down by Morningside / Kingsland station... maybe the little black-capped kids' skills and or testicles will develop, and he will eventually be creating the Kingsland, Morningside, Bungalow Bill kind of stuff, instead of just pissing people off.

The fence iI was thinking of was more the 1.800 high cheap sub-div type fence plenty of them in West Auckland they offer a metaphoric blank canvas.I do like the white picket fence the black spray stands out better and as the late great Colin of Twitterangi said'Its all black on white white on black'
