The Type Directors Club Annual is one of those weighty graphic design books that I’ve gotten into the habit of buying each year.
Purchasing the new edition at the end of every year, it’s a Christmas present to myself that I eagerly look forward to picking up. I enjoy its contents not just for the beautiful examples of Typography but as a source of inspiration across the wide range of categories it covers: books, magazines, identities, posters, video and web graphics. Throughout the year I find myself dipping in and out again and again, as it serves to get the creative juices flowing or to take me off in a completely different direction with my work.
Typography 29 is no exception. It contains 225 winning designs selected from 2,100 international submissions. With work from as far away as Germany, culturally diverse as Japan and as local as our own backyard, there is sure to be something to delight the eye of every discerning Graphic Designer out there.
As well as representing some of the finest work from 2007, Typography 29 also contains a reprint of the 1959 TDC competition catalogue. I found this feature fascinating as a look back at graphic design examples from that year and in combination with the archive of work from 2007, Typography 29 is a book that will sit on my shelf for years to come. I look forward to collecting this annual and creating a library of graphic design for myself to work from and reflect back on.
